Hungary's TVK close to starting-up new 250,000 mt/yr cracker

Hungarian petrochemicals group Tiszai Vegyi Kombinat Rt said Thursday that it was nearing completion of its new 250,000 mt/yr ethylene cracker at its complex at Tiszaujvaros, Hungary and was ready to launch test runs. The Olefin-2 project, is considered the most important unit of its Eur430-mil petrochemicals development program (PDP) launched in 2002, accounting for Eur238-mil of expenditure.

Gabor Palffy, director of communications at TVK, told Platts that the plant is 'technically completed' and would be ready to start commercial production by Dec 2004. He said that the project had been financed internally and from a loan from a consortium of foreign banks. The new cracker will raise TVK's ethylene capacity to 620,000 mt/yr. The existing Olefin-1 cracker producers 370,000 mt/yr of ethylene. The completion of PDP will increase TVK's competitive edge in the Central and Eastern European region, Palffy said.
